Bank chiefs see credit growth reviving to 11–13% despite Q1 slowdown

Top bankers at the Banking Transformation Summit struck an optimistic note on credit growth, projecting 11–13% expansion for the industry despite a tepid first quarter. SBI’s Rama Mohan Rao Amara said corporate demand was subdued as companies tapped bond markets, but expected GST reforms, a good monsoon and tax cuts to revive borrowing. Bank of Baroda’s Debadatta Chand was most bullish at 13–15%, while others stayed in the 11–12% range. Bank chiefs also stressed that deposit growth would be led by retail, agriculture and MSMEs, and reaffirmed their commitment to infrastructure lending despite a shift in household savings toward markets.
