Private equity has been living through a nightmare in recent years. Zombie companies are clogging up portfolios because selling them at prices managers wanted has been nigh on impossible. Firms have resorted to ever more convoluted ways to return cash to their investors, including selling assets to themselves and taking on new forms of borrowing.
