Regulatory autonomy should never be taken for granted, especially by central banks. Next year the Bank of England will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its independence. If it does not want to see that hard-won sovereignty undermined or constrained, it should pay closer attention to a groundswell of criticism about its bond sales.
