Trade Secrets: Dailies 08.18.2026

US Stocks open sharply lower as Trump's rejection of extending the Iran ceasefire sends Brent crude surging toward $91 and the S&P 500 toward its worst open in two weeks, even as Home Depot beats estimates before the bell and the Polymarket crowd prices just a 27% probability of a higher open — the most bearish reading since the KOSPI's historic 12% crash on July 29.

  • S&P 500 futures fell 0.41%, Nasdaq-100 futures dropped 0.76%, Dow Jones futures slipped 0.16%, and Russell 2000 futures declined 0.24% heading into Tuesday's open — a broadly risk-off setup as the Iran ceasefire's expiration Monday without a deal triggered the most significant geopolitical escalation since July. Polymarket's "S&P 500 Up or Down on August 18" contract showed just a 27% probability of a higher open, the most bearish single-session reading in weeks. Monday's session saw the Dow shed 272.63 points or 0.51% to 53,459.78, the S&P 500 fall 0.52% to 7,745.06, and the Nasdaq Composite decline 0.32% to 26,644.91, as yields and oil both rose and an early rally attempt was snuffed out.
  • Trump rejected extending the 60-day temporary ceasefire with Iran that expired Monday, stating the US had received nothing in return for the pause. A senior Iranian official responded by threatening that Tehran would shift to a "fully offensive" military posture if diplomatic efforts fail, while Trump told Fox News he would bomb Oman if it "gets in the way" of US military operations — a dramatic escalation that put the Gulf state's mediation role directly in the crosshairs. Iran's state news agency Tasmin separately reported that Tehran has ruled out any talks to extend the memorandum of understanding. Brent crude surged to $91.27 a barrel and WTI climbed to $84.20–$84.50, reversing all of last week's oil decline in a single overnight session and rekindling inflation concerns that had been fading on the back of benign CPI and PPI prints.
  • Home Depot (HD) reported Q2 2026 results before the open with analysts expecting EPS of $4.73 on revenue that would serve as a proxy for the US housing-adjacent consumer. The result comes after Friday's surprise 0.6% drop in July retail sales — the weakest reading since early 2025 — making comparable sales the number most likely to move markets, with Lowe's earnings later this week as the follow-on read. Baidu (BIDU) also reports today. Micron Technology (MU) fell 4.9% in premarket on high volume and Nvidia (NVDA) slipped 2.1%, pulling the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) lower, as the renewed Iran escalation triggered a broad risk-off rotation out of high-beta AI names. Apple (AAPL) managed a 0.6% premarket gain, providing a modest offset.
  • The economic calendar is heavy: July housing starts and import prices print at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by industrial production and capacity utilization at 9:15 a.m. ET and the pending home sales index at 10:00 a.m. ET. Wednesday's FOMC minutes at 2:00 p.m. ET are now the week's most anticipated event — given that three members dissented in favor of a hike at the July 29 meeting and Warsh declined to signal any path forward at his press conference, analysts at TheStreet said "the minutes may be more informative than usual." CME FedWatch shows a 64% probability of at least one rate hike by year-end, rising from below 50% just two weeks ago as the Iran re-escalation and oil's renewed climb revive the inflation risk the Fed had appeared to be moving past.
  • Gold edged up 0.36% to $4,453.10 an ounce in early trading, resuming its safe-haven climb after last week's modest pullback, as Iran risk reasserted itself. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) edged up 0.07% to $68.36 in premarket, a marginal holdout against the broader selloff. The VIX rose, adding a possible caution signal that the market is repricing tail risk after three weeks of relative calm. The dollar strengthened modestly against most G10 currencies while the euro held above $1.15.
  • Japan's Nikkei 225 added 0.4% on Monday, closing near 69,114 after Japan's Q2 GDP expanded just 1.1% annualized — well below the 2.0% consensus — as exports drove all the growth on the back of a weak yen rather than domestic demand improvement. The Bank of Japan separately raised its 2026 fiscal year GDP growth outlook marginally to 0.6% from 0.5%, keeping a September rate hike on the table even as the growth miss was disappointing. The Topix declined 0.11% in the same session. On Tuesday morning the region broadly fell as the Iran re-escalation filtered through overnight — the Nikkei's Chicago futures contract pointed lower and South Korea's KOSPI extended Monday's decline, having shed further ground as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both pulled back after last week's double-digit recovery. China's CSI 300 fell and Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined as Iran fears weighed on energy-import-sensitive Asian economies. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 bucked the trend modestly, holding near its record high of 9,188.50 as energy producers gained on the oil spike, keeping Australia's commodity-heavy index relatively insulated from the broader risk-off move.
