US Stocks open modestly higher on Fed decision day as markets absorb the near-certainty of the first rate hike in more than three years — with CME FedWatch pricing a 92.5% probability of a 25-basis-point move to 3.75%–4.00% at 2:00 p.m. ET — even as White House pressure for a hold, oil above $108 for Brent, and the 10-year Treasury yield near 5% for the first time since 2007 keep the tape on a knife's edge ahead of Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • S&P 500 futures gained 0.2%, Nasdaq-100 futures climbed 0.4%, and Dow futures added 77 points or 0.2% in early premarket — a cautious but positive setup as markets absorbed Tuesday's third straight session of declines in which the S&P 500 fell 0.45% to close at 7,585.72, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.78%, and the 10-year Treasury yield briefly touched 5.04% — its highest level since 2007 — before settling near 4.985% heading into Wednesday's open. The 30-year Treasury yield held at 5.374%. Asian markets rebounded overnight with the Nikkei up 0.48%, Shanghai Composite up 0.57%, Hang Seng up 0.02%, and Australia's ASX up 0.26% — providing a constructive regional backdrop heading into what is universally described as the Fed's most consequential meeting since 2023.
  • The Federal Reserve will announce its policy decision at 2:00 p.m. ET Wednesday — the first rate hike of Kevin Warsh's tenure as chair and the first increase in the overnight funds rate since July 2023. In a unanimous decision that CNBC confirmed post-market, the Fed raised the target range to 3.75%–4.00% and signaled another hike could come this year, with the post-meeting statement reading "inflation remains elevated." Warsh has largely boxed himself into this move after his hawkish Jackson Hole speech last month, and Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Christopher Phelan publicly called a hike a "mistake" citing improving inflation trends — the most direct White House pushback against Fed policy independence since the Warsh appointment. Wilsey Asset Management's Brent Wilsey warned that a hold would "surprise stocks and damage the Fed's credibility, reigniting concerns that the central bank is caving to political pressure."
  • Brent crude held at $108.06, down 0.63% from Tuesday's close, while WTI was at $104.77, down 1.00% — both giving back a small portion of their extraordinary recent rally even as Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline remained shut following drone attacks and sources continued to warn that Saudi export stocks could run out within days. Gold rose 0.80% to $4,367.23 and silver gained 1.97% to $65.118 — both safe-haven metals catching a bid as investors positioned defensively ahead of the rate decision. The 10-year Treasury yield held near 4.985% and the 30-year at 5.374%, with the UK's 10-year gilt at 5.3897% and Germany's 10-year Bund at 3.5343% — a synchronized global bond selloff driven by the dual forces of Iran-driven energy inflation and the Warsh Fed's hawkish turn.
  • Markets are pricing the probability of another quarter-point hike at 45% for October and 30% for December — a cumulative path that would put the Fed funds rate at 4.25%–4.50% by year-end if both materialize, the highest since 2007 and well above where the market was pricing rates entering 2026. The August retail sales control group figure — a direct GDP feed — was due at 8:30 a.m. ET alongside August housing starts and building permits. Existing home sales for August print at 10:00 a.m. ET. The EIA crude oil inventory report at 10:30 a.m. ET will also draw attention given the acute Saudi supply disruption narrative.
  • The AI trade faces its third consecutive session of selling pressure as the Anthropic-OpenAI-Musk pacing commentary continues to reverberate. Chip names Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, TSMC, Lumentum, and Coherent were broadly under pressure in Tuesday's session. CoreWeave, Nebius, and AI power infrastructure plays including Vistra and Talen Energy also declined. The combined effect of the AI pacing narrative and the rate hike has created the most sustained dual-headwind for the AI trade since April's tariff shock — with Schwab noting that shares "have a weak risk/reward profile, particularly with greater exposure to a potential" continued rate-hiking cycle.
  • South Korea's KOSPI remained under pressure in Tuesday's session as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both fell on the oil and rate headwinds. Japan's Nikkei 225 bounced 0.48% in early Wednesday trade — the Nikkei's first positive session in four — as the near-certainty of the Fed decision removed the "uncertainty premium" that had been weighing on growth stocks. China's Shanghai Composite rose 0.57% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged up 0.02% as mainland markets continued to benefit from relative energy cost insulation and domestic AI infrastructure investment flows. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.26% as energy producers lifted the index. Germany's DAX was last at 25,440, down 128 points in Monday's session, while the FTSE 100 rose 75 points to 10,818.
