US Stocks open broadly higher to start the final week of September as Brent crude falls for a fourth straight session — its longest losing streak in three months — Nasdaq 100 futures surge to 30,007 for the first time since August, and the post-Fed rate hike relief trade accelerates into a full risk-on sweep, even as Trump's Sunday Truth Social warning to Iran that "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE" and "there won't be anything left" keeps geopolitical risk embedded in the tape.

  • Dow Jones futures rose 0.35%, S&P 500 futures advanced 0.41% to trade near 7,730, and Nasdaq-100 futures surged 0.56% — with the NQ1! contract opening Sunday evening at 30,007.25, a 1.33% jump from Friday's close of 29,613.68 and the first breach of 30,000 since the August correction. Polymarket's "S&P 500 Up or Down on September 21" contract reflected an 81% probability of a higher open, the most bullish single-session reading since early August. Russell 2000 futures ticked up 0.34%, with breadth expanding as the post-hike relief rally broadens beyond mega-cap tech. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index is the day's only notable data point at 8:30 a.m. ET, leaving the tape to be driven by flows and Iran headlines rather than economic data.
  • Brent crude fell for a fourth consecutive session — its longest losing streak since late June — as shipping data showed marginally improved tanker flows through the Gulf of Oman's southern corridor and the post-Fed yield relief reduced the dollar's safe-haven premium. WTI crude traded near $100.50 per barrel, holding above $100 despite the decline as Trump's Sunday warning to Iran revived near-term strike fears. The yen remained near 156.95 per dollar following Friday's paradoxical weakening after the BOJ's 7-2 rate hike to 1.25% — with Governor Ueda's cautious guidance on additional tightening reducing the currency's upside despite the rate increase. The dollar was broadly flat and gold futures gained 0.49% to $4,421.30 while silver surged 2.34% to $67.64.
  • The week's earnings calendar is lighter than recent weeks but consumer-focused, with AutoZone (AZO) and KB Home (KBH) reporting Monday, Cintas (CTAS), Paychex (PAYX), and General Mills (GIS) on Tuesday, and Darden Restaurants (DRI) and Costco (COST) on Wednesday September 24 alongside August new home sales data. The week also brings September flash PMIs Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. ET — the first real-time read on economic activity in the post-hike environment — alongside Conference Board Consumer Confidence Wednesday and Q2 GDP final revision Thursday. Friday brings August PCE inflation — the Fed's preferred gauge — as the last major inflation data before the November FOMC meeting.
  • Warren Buffett's Friday resignation as Berkshire Hathaway chairman — with son Howard Buffett taking over as chair and Greg Abel continuing as CEO — continued to reverberate over the weekend. The transition removes the last founding leadership link at one of the world's most closely watched conglomerates, nine months after Abel assumed the CEO role at the May 2025 annual meeting. Berkshire Hathaway shares are in focus premarket as the market processes the governance change. The HKMA raised its base rate in lockstep with the Fed's September hike — as it mechanically does given the Hong Kong dollar peg — pushing Hong Kong property stocks including Sun Hung Kai and Hang Lung Properties down more than 3.4% last week.
  • Japan's Nikkei 225 was closed Monday for a public holiday — the Autumnal Equinox — following Friday's 1.4% gain that was the index's best session since the post-FOMC relief rally on September 17. The holiday removes one of the region's most AI-sensitive indexes from Monday's tape. South Korea's KOSPI rose approximately 1.5% on continued chip strength — with TSMC, SK Hynix, and Samsung all remaining strong leading indicators for AI memory and foundry demand — while the Kosdaq was little changed. Saxo's Asia Market Quick Take noted the KOSPI at 6,988 was "the standout performer in Asia this morning" as foreign selling snapped a seven-day streak on Friday, with mainland investors recording their 10th consecutive day of net purchases via Stock Connect in Hong Kong. Singapore's Straits Times Index was flat at 5,656. Grab separately announced a $1.5 billion acquisition of a 60% stake in BNPL platform Atome Financial — the largest Southeast Asian fintech deal of the year.
  • China's CSI 300 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index both edged modestly higher, with Alibaba gaining 4.0% and Lenovo surging 9.5% in Hong Kong on Friday — the Hang Seng's best single session since September 4. Mainland investors have now recorded 10 consecutive days of net purchases via Stock Connect — a sustained institutional buying streak that reflects growing confidence in Chinese tech valuations at current levels. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.46% to 8,630.40 on Monday, lagging the regional advance as iron ore softened and rate-sensitive property and consumer sectors faced continued pressure from the synchronized Fed-BOJ tightening cycle. India's Nifty 50 added 0.56% as lower oil provided some relief to India's import cost outlook. European bond markets outperformed equity markets on Monday with Treasuries climbing across the curve — a technical reversal after weeks of bond selling that provided additional fuel for the equity relief rally.
